The Portuguese-Style Hat

À Portuguesa 25Jun21

The Portuguese-style hat that makes up the costume has its own characteristics outlined by the equestrian tradition in Portugal.

In the case of men, the way in which equestrian personalities in Portugal used hats, or "adapted" their own styles, had some influence on the way their fellow countrymen used their hats, but the model that persisted the most and that it is now used until today is the wide-brimmed model.

The flap is about nine centimeters long with a cylindrical cup measuring about ten centimeters with a ribbon around it that fastens in a loop.

The colors of the Portuguese hat vary between grey and black, and the above model is considerate the male model.

In the lady costume, the typical model is presented with a curved, shorter brim, with a round and slightly convex crown, adorned with two pompoms.

With the option of using the male costume by ladies, the use of the men's hat has also become an option for the ladies, who can thus choose between the two options.

The hat is a mandatory accessory in Portuguese-style costume and must respect the rules of exclusive use of the permitted models.
